Blowzone – Steve Smith

Steve is a peripatetic woodwind teacher in South East Cornwall and West Devon. He is a director for South East Cornwall Stage Band and a coach for Cornwall Youth Orchestra, where he trains and encourages the young players. In September 1999 he initiated Blowzone and the offshoot group, Saxmania.

            Steve’s main instrument is clarinet, but he also plays saxophone and flute. He trained at Trinity College and on finishing his diploma studied for a further year at Rolle College, Exmouth for a Certificate of Education.

            Performing has always been part of the teaching and musical scenario and Steve has played with Cornish Sinfonia, South West Sinfonietta, Three Spires Orchestra (based in Truro), Ten Tors Orchestra (based in the Dartmoor region) and many other bands in the West Country.

Blowzone Section Leaders
Each section of the band has a 'leader' who is responsible for supplying practice music to members. The leaders are as follows:

OBOE - Jill Rodgers
ALTO SAX - John Medland
TENOR SAX - Becky Martin

Flute Cocktail – Michael Wood

Michael is a flautist and music teacher who, like Steve trained at Trinity College, where he graduated with GTCL and LTCL diplomas. He tutors the flute section in Blowzone as well as directing Flute Cocktail, a flute choir formed initially as a spin-off from Blowzone players. The group’s membership has grown rapidly since 2003 to a total of 20  players from all over Devon and Cornwall.

Michael has also played with Cornish Sinfonia, Southwest Sinfonietta and Plymouth Symphony Orchestra, but performing is not the only high-flying string to his bow. As a flying instructor he works full time at Exeter and Plymouth airports. He has also worked as a coach driver all over Britain and Europe for Taw and Torridge Coaches.
